The world of online AOL chat rooms. Ahh, the good ol’ days, when you actually texted to tell a good story or get to know someone’s life. I made a friend in Iowa, a married woman that helped me through a dark period in my life. We never met. I think she wanted to marry me or get divorced or escape from her life. I think we both helped each other find answers inside ourselves that we didn’t know existed.
The difference is now Tinder, Bumble, Online dating, is like you said, either an escape from loneliness, or a picture swiping service that connects people to a first date to see if there is any ‘real’ connection.
There is no real connection or story in these — other than sexting, d*ck pics, and the occasional first date. I would love to see that actual stats on how many people meet in person compared to the positive swipes (I sound like a Corona expert).
The funny thing is I typically have more connection online in AOL chat rooms than I do today with the rolodex mentality of “there is always the next one,” rather than getting to know the imperfect crevices and nooks of the person in the matrix.
