  1. Strive for time affluence. Happiness isn’t measured in status, or money, or bank accounts — it’s measured in freedom. Time affluence is one of the biggest predictors of happiness.* Don’t pretend for a second that because everyone else is doing something that you should do it. Be a contrarian. Be unique. Leadership isn’t doing what others do because they look successful. It’s doing what you need to do to stay true to yourself.
  2. Save and invest. I always said this to myself as I played pro basketball and even now as I coach/train kids, run camps, or create value/stuff/concepts to sell: “Save money, invest money. Save money, invest money.” If you can’t save money and invest it to work for you while you sleep, don’t pretend for a second you’ll be living a free life. You’ll be working for someone else, which is fine as long you understand that’s the game you want to play.
  3. Don’t get caught up in the rat race. The rat race happens for most Americans because they get in debt trying to keep up with others’ lifestyles. Create your own lifestyle. Research minimalism. Open a Scottrade account and buy Vanguard ETFs that pay you 5% a month on your money. Start early, start small, and start often. Or get more aggressive and spend ten to a hundred bucks on some cryptocurrencies you like (and research). I invest $10–$300…
