This quest to begin a new life after professional sports hasn’t been easy, but why did I expect it to be?

I continue to ask myself: “What would your future self want to be doing right now if you could do anything?”

Instead of waiting for answers, let’s start doing, acting, and being who we want our future selves to be, like today.

These small daily actions are how you accrue compounding interest in your future identity.

Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman said, “This is something a teacher told me years ago, and he’s right:

If you’re auditioning for something that you know you’re never going to get — or maybe you read the script and didn’t even like it, but you still have to go — if you get a chance to act in a room that somebody else has paid rent for, then you’re given a free chance to practice your craft. And in that moment, you should act as well as you can.

Because when you leave the room, and you have acted as well as you can, there’s no way the people who have watched you will forget it.”

Life advice shouldn't stay hard, even if it starts that way.
